Council tax
Council tax helps fund services across the borough. For 2026/27, Southwark increased its level of council tax by 4.99%. This consists of a 2.99% general increase and a 2% adult social care precept, which provides additional funding for adult social care. While this increase is not legally required, the Government assumes the council will apply it when calculating how much funding Southwark needs. The council could choose a lower increase in the future but this will generate less income and required additional savings from services. 4.99% is also the maximum increase the council could apply without securing residents’ approval through a local referendum.
